What is Life Coaching?

When you work with a life and wellness coach you will have someone that can work with you to identify your strengths, unique skills and talents. Coaches work with you in creating and setting goals and a step-by-step plan to achieve those goals and your full potential to live the life you desire. Coaches will collaborate with you to identify the barriers preventing you from reaching your full potential and steps to overcome those barriers. 

No one plan or strategy works for everyone. You and your coach will create a plan, a road map, with action steps that are specific to you, your lifestyle and goals. With a road map leading you you are able to take those steps with confidence and reach your goals quicker.

What Life Coaching is Not

Life coaching is not a substitute for working with a licensed mental health professional. Licensed therapists work with you to diagnose and treat problematic behaviors, relationship issues, mood disorders and other mental illnesses. A therapist is able to help address underlying negative thought patterns that impact emotional wellbeing. A therapist holds space to process difficult emotions, traumatic events, distressing negative thoughts, and works with you towards unlocking emotional barriers that may be blocking your goals. A therapist works to identify healthy coping skills to manage distress.

A life coach can not diagnose or treat a mental illness. A life coach will help you look at where you are now, determine where you want to go and make a plan to achieve the desired results. Working with a coach can help you in many areas of your life and increase motivation to achieve your goals.

A life coach can be thought of as more action-oriented, while a therapist holds space for processing distressing things in life and works to uncover underlying issues. A life coach is a good fit for someone who is not in immediate distress and does not engage in unhealthy or life-treating coping mechanisms.
